I’m a local man, married to a care worker from a mining background. We have a teenage daughter who was born when I was 19, and working in Alldays (now the Co-Op) on Mill Road. As a family we lived on housing benefit and tax credits to get us through tough times, until eventually I went to university to become a qualified scientist. Thanks to the policies of a Labour government, and support from the social security safety net (plus a bit of grit and determination), I’m now a Senior Lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University, where I teach biology and ecology.
