The Universal Credit Crisis

Universal Credit is the government’s controversial new benefits system and Panorama is with families as they struggle with their claims. The programme follows one council as it deals with mounting rent arrears and tenants in crisis, which is resulting in families being left penniless, under pressure and not being able to pay rents and sometimes being evicted.
Rent arrears for people in the UK claiming Universal credit are twice as high as those on other benefits, which means tenants are very, very stressed, landlords are losing out and it is affecting councils. This council used to have 346 landlords on their books, but this has now plummeted to 50. Also the council doesn’t have enough accommodation and universal credit is affecting the number of council houses being built, creating a perfect storm of burden for the council.
